Cape Town – Tensions are reportedly flaring up in Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party, a development that has forced the veteran leader to call for an emergency politburo meeting this weekend.

A Daily News report said Mugabe, who is currently on a working visit in the Far East, was alarmed by the escalating infighting and mudslinging over divisive provincial elections.

Zanu-PF’s national chairperson Simon Khaya-Moyo confirmed there would be a meeting on Saturday to settle the chaos.

Meanwhile provincial elections in the remaining seven provinces have been put to a halt.

Of late there have been reports of intensifying fights within Zanu-PF as different factions position themselves for the eventual succession of the 89-year-old Mugabe.

The situation has become tense resulting in some of the party officials tightening their security following death threats.
