Zimbabwe urged to guarantee safety of journalists
Zimbabwe urged to guarantee safety of journalists

Global media watchdog, the Committee for the Protection of Journalists, on Friday urged Zimbabwe to guarantee the safety of journalists after a reporter was beaten up and detained by police.

Cape Town – The European Union has reportedly set the implementation of electoral reforms as a key requisite for Zimbabwe's full re-engagement with the bloc.

According to the News Day, EU Ambassador to Zimbabwe Aldo Dell'Ariccia said the bloc was still concerned about the manner in which last year's elections were held, insisting they did not conform to best democratic practices.

Dell'Ariccia said Mugabe's government had the task of restoring democracy in the country, insisting electoral reforms would guard against disputed elections in the future.

Mugabe, 90, romped to victory with a 62% majority of the national vote in the 31 July elections, with the opposition, however, claiming that the election was a "farce".
