Mugabe a 'controversial choice' for new AU chair
Mugabe a 'controversial choice' for new AU chair

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has taken over the post of African Union chair, replacing Mauritania's President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.

Cape Town – Police in Harare have reportedly arrested two officials at a city hotel room where Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (Galz) were conducting a training workshop.

According to New Zimbabwe.com, those arrested were identified as Galz youth co-ordinator, Natasha Dowell and training facilitator, Tawanda Mugudze.

The renewed clampdown on the organisation is said to be motivated by President Robert Mugabe's recent anti-gay sentiments, the report said.

Mugabe hinted earlier this month that his government would soon deal decisively with homosexuals in his country. The veteran leader said this as he showed support for his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni who recently signed a "draconian" anti-gay law.

Mugabe has in the past been quoted as saying homosexuals are "worse than pigs and dogs".

The report said Dowell was charged with contravening sections of the Public Order and Security Act (Posa) by allegedly failing to seek authority from the police before conducting the "public" meeting.

Maguze was later released without being charged while Dowell remained in custody.

The remaining eighteen training participants had their details recorded but managed to leave the venue freely, said the report.
