Zim rangers kill marauding elephants

2012-05-05 17:00

Harare - Zimbabwe wildlife authorities say rangers shot and killed two marauding elephants after a man was trampled and gored to death in the country's northeast.

State radio reported on Saturday the man died late on Friday when a herd of about 19 elephants roamed into a village farming district near the Mozambique border. It said rangers were trying to drive the herd back into unpopulated areas spanning the frontier.

The radio said wildlife authorities warned villagers not to confront elephants stomping through their fields with "provocative actions".

A fully grown elephant eats about 300kg of foliage a day. Elephant attacks are common in areas in Zimbabwe where impoverished human settlements are encroaching into wildlife sanctuaries.

Shame...Poor people...But i mean like really...Why do people wanna reside next to a wildlife...? Its really stupid....And why weren't those elephants secured like in Zoo or Kruger Parks??? Nxa....

      Squeegee - 2012-05-05 18:04

Where were you when they handed out brains? Do you think towns and cities just happened without impact on the wildlife? Where you live now animals were once abundant.

skhalos - perhaps you are the one that is really stupid, this IS Africa, hence there is wildlife. There are people living in Africa, hence people will often reside next to wildlife. Outside of SA there are very few fences containing wildlife, it's actually quite nice. Perhaps you should visit outside of our borders sometime, get to know your continent a bit better?

Probeer soos 'n volwasse mens dink.

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-05-06 12:02

Self destruct is what it's all about, maybe it's just a cycle the earth will go through for eternity. Imagine the planet without humans, that would be a fascinating study to do for some bright martian one day. I doubt humans would be missed, I don't think we make up any essential part of the planets ecosystem.
