Mugabe 'won't sign constitution'
Mugabe 'won't sign constitution'

Zimbabwe's president Robert Mugabe won't sign the draft constitution into the new supreme law of the country as long as it "disqualifies him from contesting the next elections", a senior Zanu-PF official says.

A dusty road leads to the village of Wedza, where veterans of Zimbabwe's liberation war eke out a meagre living on their farm cooperative, which after a promising start now brings only despair.

Harare - Zimbabwe has released three Botswanan game rangers who strayed across its borders while tracking wild animals, causing a diplomatic stand-off between the two countries, media reported on Wednesday.

According to The Herald newspaper, the rangers were released after they were found guilty of entering Zimbabwe illegally last month, and fined $100.

"The ministry welcomes the magistrates' court ruling... which puts to rest the issue," said a statement from the Zimbabwe ministry of foreign affairs.

The arrest had prompted a diplomatic spat between the two neighbours, with Botswana threatening to recall its defense and intelligence envoys from Zimbabwe by the end of February.

Zimbabwe was expected to reciprocate and recall its attaches in Gaborone.

The ministry also said it never refused to co-operate with its Botswanan counterpart and accused Gaborone officials of overreacting over "a simple administration issue".

Relations between Zimbabwe and Botswana have cooled since President Ian Khama, the only leader in southern Africa openly critical of President Robert Mugabe, came to power.
