Cape Town – Zimbabwe’s Broadcasting Holdings (ZBH) is reportedly set to lay off half of its employees amid reports that the state broadcaster has failed to pay its workers for the past six months.

According to Daily News the state broadcaster will retrench 500 workers and pay outstanding wages.

George Charamba, the permanent secretary in the information ministry told a parliamentary portfolio committee on Media that the broadcaster was in the process of a turnaround programme that included retrenchments, the report said.

Charamba said ZBH employed about 1 000 people who had not been paid for the past six months as the broadcaster had a debt of $44m.

An AFP report said government last month dissolved the entire ZBH board and sent its top managers, including the chief executive officer, on forced leave.

Charamba said the top management was removed to pave the way for an audit to identify if the broadcaster's woes were due to "governance failure, malfeasance or simply misaligned business decisions."
