Zim city urges synchronised flushing

2012-09-22 17:41

Harare - City authorities in Zimbabwe's second largest city are appealing to home owners to flush their toilets at a specified time as a way to unblock sewers after days of severe water rationing.

Bulawayo City Council has asked its more than 1 million residents to flush their toilets simultaneously at 19:30 on Saturday when water supplies are restored.

City officials say "synchronised flushing" is needed to clear waste that would have accumulated in sanitary facilities which will have been affected by days of water outages.

Bulawayo's two main supply dams have been drying up due to drought conditions prevailing in the arid, southwestern part of Zimbabwe raising fears of worsening water shortages before the rainy season starts in November.

Hope the long proposed plan (since 1910) to bring water to Bulawayo from the Zambezi river (450km away) does come to fruition.

at least they have flushing toilets in zimbabwe , a third world country , in south africa the only first world african country according to some ,you have the bucket system and half of the black populace in the informal settlements dont even have toilets . what i believe happened is water was cut to all the residental areas hence the flow to of sewerage was disrupted , so the officials are asking for synchronised flushing so that the pressure created by the flowing water will push all the stuck sewerage in the pipes hence clearing the blockages .

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-09-22 20:20

rupert - this is in the city of Bulawayo -the system was built before Bob became the Mad king of Africa. Far less toilets in Zim than here. If you pulled your head out of yours you would know that.

      simon.sinimoni - 2012-09-22 18:51

The 'european infrastructure' is working just fine unless if you consider the dry and hot weather pattern as 'european infrastructure'.You dont need to have a white skin to be a good waste disposal technician

      simon.sinimoni - 2012-09-22 19:22

You go to the toilet and flush using water from your own internal reserves.Fill up containers before the scheduled water cut times and you are safe because the Bulawayo city engineering department does not deviate from the official water rationing schedule.

      simon that sounds like failure....

Henk-Bulawayo is not some place in the rain forest on the equator. Here it is dry ,very dry and f@@ken dry,we get rain only about 3 months per year such that the reserve dams are never full and there has been water shortages since Cecil John Rhodes was last here.I know of several websites which can give you good insight on Rhodesian and Zimbabwean history especially the long proposed Zambezi to Bulawayo water project ,please make use of them before you comment.

Looks lyk everyone is missing the point here. The city council is nt asking people to s**t at the same tym but to flush @19:30 wen water supplies are restored so as to have more water to clean sewer lines. It sound sily frm the way it hs bn reported bt it makes sense.
