Zimbabwe 'witches' to have medical tests

2012-06-28 14:16

Harare - Court officials in Zimbabwe say two self-confessed witches who claim to have flown on a magical grain threshing basket are to undergo medical and psychiatric examinations.

Prosecutors said on Thursday two women were arrested earlier this month after they were found naked in the yard of a home in the town of Chinhoyi, 110km northeast of Harare. The women are charged under witchcraft laws carrying the penalty of a fine.

In local belief, the flat, traditional hand-held winnowing basket is equivalent to a witch's broomstick in Western fable.

Officials said a Chinhoyi court on Wednesday set another hearing for 11 July to hear medical reports and testimony from tribal healers.

The middle aged women claimed the basket "ditched" them in the yard after a naked night ritual nearby.

Belief in witchcraft and tribal superstition is common in Zimbabwe.

Then, years ago, there was a minister who claimed that water would run uphill without any encouragement, if the trenches were designed in a certain way. *nod* Yep. They all need a shrink

  • Barefoot - 2012-06-28 15:32

    I'm not saying witches exist or not this is directed to Christians who are and will be saying the idea of witches and what not is ridiculous and shows the poor mindset of some- what i find is that in the bible there is mention of witches, so if you say you believe it -the bible- and find the idea ridiculous you might want to revisit your chief instruction manual *something to ponder on*

      E=MC2 - 2012-06-28 15:35

      kind of pre-empting the argument a bit aren’t you...?

    where else can we hear about this, Zimbabwe ROCKS with witchcraft

  • simon.sinimoni - 2012-06-28 15:59

    In Zimbabwe it is actually a crime to accuse somebody of witchcraft ,however when somebody confesses to witchcraft it becomes complicated for the courts and police.The justice system in Zimbabwe does not like to convict people for alleged witchcraft and will find alternative charges like tresspassing ,indecent exposure(i.e walking around naked in public).If you confess involvement in witchcraft the courts will send u for endless tests and in most cases declare you insane then send you to hospital

    \Witchraft Laws\? Woweeee, lol!

  • antin.herinck - 2012-06-28 20:40

    I don't get it. They are charged with witchcraft, 'cause it's a punishable crime. But they need to be spychiatrically checked out first? So if they are found sane, they are guilty of witchcraft -and thus insane, belief in witchcraft being insanity. But now they get only a fine. And if they are found insane, then their claims to practicing witchcraft are false, so they won't get a fine, due to diminished capacity. But then they should be locked up in a mental asylum. And if you find some naked trespassers in your yard, it's OK with the law there, as long as they did not arrive in a basket, by air? One cannot win in Zim.
