Chinese call for stability in Zimbabwe

Chinese vice premier Wang Yang has urged Zimbabwe to ensure peace and political stability ahead of elections this year.

Harare - A top ally of Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai was Tuesday re-elected as speaker of parliament after the Supreme Court nullified his 2008 election three weeks ago.

Lovemore Moyo garnerd 105 votes, defeating a candidate from President Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF who scored 93 votes.

The court action was based on a bid launched by Jonathan Moyo, the former information minister and Mugabe loyalist, who challenged his election, saying the voting process was chaotic and disorderly.

The position of speaker of parliament has always been held by members of Zanu-PF.

"This victory gives us an opportunity to continue to democratise and modernise our parliamentary portfolio committees," Moyo said after the vote.

His election would be seen as a big boost for Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) whose senior officials have been jailed and harassed in the past weeks.

In 2009, the MDC and Zanu-PF entered into a unity government after a political crisis stemming from the controversial 2008 presidential vote.

The presidential vote failed to produce a clear winner, after Tsvangirai won the first round but pulled out of a run-off, citing deadly attacks against his supporters that his party said left more than 200 dead.

The power sharing government has been marred by political tensions as both parties differ over issues of governance.

Early this year Mugabe called for elections to end the shaky deal, a move which is supported by Tsvangirai.
