Harare - Zimbabwean NewsDay publishers, Alpha Media Holdings (AMH), has reportedly paid its staff with grocery coupons to supplement their December salaries, reports New Zimbabwe.

According to the report, (AMH) has been struggling to pay its workers for the past three months.

One of the struggling company’s unnamed employees expressed his anger, saying: "We do not pay rent using grocery vouchers."

He added: "Our colleagues that were sent home earlier are in a better position as we are now subsidising the company. Where does the management think we are getting the money to report for work every day?”

The company retrenched some of its workers in July following a controversial ruling Supreme Court ruling that that gave employers the leeway to terminate job contracts by giving workers just three months notice.

AMH is owned by business mogul Trevor Ncube who also owns various other newspapers, including two weeklies - The Zimbabwe Independent and The Standard. He also owns the Mail and Guardian in South Africa.

Reports indicate that AMH hit rock bottom as early as January last year after it introduced its Bulawayo newspaper, the Southern Eye which was meant to compete with the state owned Chronicle.
