Harare - Zimbabwe's political parties have blasted President Robert Mugabe and his family for seeking specialist treatmen outside the country "after running down the local health system", reports NewsDay.

Mugabe, 92, disclosed over the weekend that his daughter, Bona Mugabe-Chikore, had travelled to the Far East for maternity services by "medical doctors she is familiar with".

Following Mugabe's statement, the country's opposition took a swipe at the nonagenarian, with the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) spokesperson Obert Gutu questioning the first family's faith in local health services.

"It boggles the mind why Bona Chikore, who is ordinarily resident in Zimbabwe, will fly all the way to the Far East simply to give birth. We have got some very advanced and well-equipped maternity hospitals right here in Harare and one just wonders why the Mugabe family always invariably prefers to travel abroad for their entire medical needs," Gutu was quoted as saying.

Another opposition party, the People's Democratic Party, said it was surprising that Mugabe, who always claimed that "Africa is for Africans and Zimbabwe is his", always sought medical services outside the country.

Last year, Mugabe's wife, Grace, was also treated outside of the country after she reportedly was diagnosed with colon cancer.
