Masvingo - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has given the "thumbs-up" to calls by his supporters to have his birthday declared a national holiday, reports New Zimbabwe.

Mugabe celebrates his birthday on February 21.

The organisers of the long-time ruler's birthday celebrations, the 21st February Movement, recently advocated for his birthday to be declared a national holiday.

The group was set up on his behalf in 1986 with a view of encouraging Zimbabweans, young people in particular, to emulate Mugabe's "revolutionary ideas, charismatic leadership and selfless policies".

In support of its call for Mugabe's birthday to be declared a holiday, the 21st February Movement compared the nonagenarian with neighbouring South Africa's freedom icon Nelson Mandela whose birthday on July 18 was declared international Nelson Mandela Day by the United Nations.

Mugabe told supporters at his birthday celebrations over the weekend that he was "humbled" by the idea, adding that his ruling Zanu-PF party would make the final decision.

He said the day should be used to teach and encourage respect amongst young people in the country.

Mugabe held a $800 000 birthday party on Saturday, which was attended by tens of thousands of party loyalists, officials and members of the public.

Mugabe, who turned 92 last Sunday, has ruled Zimbabwe for 36 years.
