Harare – Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is set to meet with at least 10 000 war veterans drawn from all corners of the country next week, a report said on Friday.

The meeting, which is scheduled for April 7, will discuss issues affecting the former freedom fighters and the country.

According to the state-owned Herald newspaper, the attendees for the "crunch" indaba will be handpicked by the planning committee that comprises the country's security top brass.

This comes after the freedom fighters were brutally attacked by riot police in February when they attempted to gather for a rally in Harare.

Following the incident, a panicking Mugabe immediately apologised, saying that he would like to meet with the war veterans, reported NewsDay.

"We have a lot to learn from the war veterans because they are more experienced. But I don’t want them to be bullied," Mugabe was quoted as saying at the time.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for the Welfare Service for the War Veterans, War Collaborators, Ex-Political Detainees and Restrictees, Brigadier-General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi, said the meeting would be held at the City Sports Centre in Harare.

"It has been approved for a total of 10 000 delegates to be invited. This figure comprises the president and his fellow leaders of the party who were in the liberation struggle, the entire leadership of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association from the national executive to the district level, war veterans who are in the civil service and war veterans to be identified at district level who may not be members of the association and do not at the same time hold any positions, " Tapfumaneyi was quoted saying.
