Harare – At least 30 people are feared dead after a bus they were travelling in reportedly sideswiped a haulage truck and caught fire on Wednesday in Nyamatikiti River near Chaka in Chirumanzu.

According to the state-owned Herald newspaper, most of the victims were said to have been "burnt beyond recognition".

The South Africa-bound bus had over 60 passengers on board, while the truck was laden with tyres.

At least 15 passengers managed to escape through the windows, witnesses were quoted as saying.

Police guarded the shell of the bus, "with the charred remains of some of the passengers", the report said.

The accident occurred just a few weeks after 15 people died in a horrific accident near the city of Bulawayo in the southern part of the country.

Bodies were trapped for several hours under the wreckage of the crash between a haulage truck and a minibus.

The truck's driver said that he hit a pothole and lost control.
