Bulawayo - A Zimbabwean thief, who got stuck in a chimney in March has been sentenced to 36 months in jail, says a report.

According to the state owned Chronicle newspaper, Andrea Zunga, 33, was facing charges of unlawful entry, and theft.

Zunga had pleaded not guilty to the charges but he was found guilty after overwhelming evidence against him was presented.

Passing down judgment magistrate Nyaradzo Ringisai sentenced the convicted thief to 36 months behind bars, but suspended 12 months for 5-years on condition he would not commit a similar offence.

"You will serve an effective 24 months in prison. You have to restitute complainant the sum of $400 within six months. You have been found guilty as you are charged. You planned to go and steal with other co-accused person who are still at large but unfortunately you got trapped..," Ringisai was quoted as saying.

In March reports indicated that Zunga was left by his two accomplices stuck in a chimney at a youth centre they had robbed.

Zunga was rescued from his unfortunate ordeal when a cleaner heard him calling for help, said the report.

The fire brigade had to smash the chimney to rescue Zunga from Thabiso Youth Centre in Makokoba township.
