10 arrested for RAF fraud

2010-12-10 12:46

Ten people were arrested in Kwazakele and Soweto-on-Sea near Uitenhage today for allegedly submitting false claims to the Road Accident Fund, Eastern Cape police said.

Warrant Officer Marianette Olivier said they all allegedly tried to claim for accidents which never happened.

“They were all potential claims, so they were not paid out yet.”

The Hawks arrested the group, aged between 20 and 48, just after 4am today.

Seven of them were women.

They would appear in the Uitenhage Magistrates Court today on charges of fraud.

“This operation formed part of an investigation that has been going on for a while,” Olivier said.

Another 22 people were arrested yesterday as part of the same investigation in Uitenhage, Kwanobuhle and Despatch.

They appeared in court on the same day and the case was postponed to March 10.
