Making dreams come true

Danny Jordaan once compared the struggle to convince the world of SA’s credibility as host nation with the Struggle against apartheid.

Jordaan was appointed CEO of the Soccer World Cup Bid Committee in 1998, with the eye on 2006; alas, Germany beat SA by one vote and Jordaan had to be content with being a member of the organising committee for that event.

After much lobbying, Fifa agreed to adopt a rotation format, and Jordaan’s second bid for 2010 was victorious.

South Africa would host the biggest sports tournament on the planet for the first time and, as it turned out, the ‘most successful’ Soccer World Cup ever.

Jordaan is one of the world’s top 50 soccer administrators – as the marketing-savvy CEO of the SA Football Association, since 1997 he’s helped raise revenues from R29 million to R325 million.

The US, UK, Nigeria and Ghana showered him with awards for the success of the World Cup, and he was named African of the Year in 2010.

It’s some compensation for a promising young soccer player denied the chance to play for his country due to apartheid.
