Global music misfits

This band needs little introduction, but let’s start by dropping some names.

They share an agent with Marilyn Manson, a lawyer with the late Michael Jackson and have worked with Rammstein, electronica pioneer Aphex Twin, designer Alexander Wang and artist Takashi Murukami.

They’ve hung out at film director David Lynch’s house and are working on a project with District 9’s Neill Blomkamp.

They famously dissed global pop star Lady Gaga, with a cheeky song and video, and chose to support the Red Hot Chilli Peppers on their SA tour instead.

Dubbing themselves ‘zef rap-rave’, Ninja’s laser-fast verbal skills, enigmatic DJ Hi-Tek’s killer beats and Yo-landi Vi$$er’s high-pitched expletives have propelled Die Antwoord into becoming SA’s first YouTube megastars, with ‘interweb’ views since their first online video post in 2010 now into the multi-millions.

Their freaky antics, in the process creating a new musical genre and a lexicon of new slang, earned the group a US record deal (which they later dropped) and international tours.

After years of experiments with other acts, this inventive trio’s new incarnation – a totally original mix of Cape Flats gangster imagery, whiplash-tight music and visual production, and a back story of white-trash origins – has resulted in a true ‘next level’ global career.
