Building dreams

He’s the visionary behind the planned MoDILA (Museum of Design Innovation Leadership & Art) in Cape Town, which will not only celebrate and develop African design culture but help transform society and public policy.

He believes good design is ‘a basic human right’.

True passion and the drive to make a difference have made architect Mokena Makeka stand out.

In 2010 he scooped the Johnnie Walker Celebrating Strides award; in 2011 his acclaimed design for a railway police station at Retreat dispelled the idea of police stations as cold, unfriendly places.

Makeka was one of only two Africans picked by famed architects Herzog & De Meuron for the Ordos 100 list, for which 100 architects each design a villa in the new Mongolian city of Ordos (reportedly the ‘new Dubai’).

Makeka was part of the Fifa 2010 Arts and Culture task team, is a lecturer at UCT and a studio lecturer and external examiner at Columbia University in the US.

And in 2014 he’ll be sitting on the scientific committee for the UIA World Congress.
