10111 operator tells caller to ‘f*** off’

2012-03-19 07:34

Primedia Broadcasting head of news and Crime Line Yusuf Ambramjee was sworn at when he called the police’s emergency hotline number 10111 over the weekend.

Ambramjee, who is also head of Lead SA, said today that he called 10111 at about 2.30pm yesterday after he suspected four men in a car, in Laudium, near Pretoria, were dealing in drugs.

He said a woman operator answered. He asked her to please send a vehicle. She said she would and hung up without taking any details.

“I called back about three or four times and every time she hung up on me. I called back again and she responded: ‘F*** off’! This was around 2.43pm.”

Ambramjee then called again and asked to speak to the commander and was told he was on lunch. He was then put through to a supervisor who was very apologetic and immediately took the details.

“But by the time the police came these guys had left,” he said.

Ambramjee had since laid a complaint with the office of the provincial commissioner, Brigadier Neville Malila, and the Independent Complaints Directorate.

Malila could not immediately be reached for comment.
