11 arrested for hijacking building, kidnapping tenants

Eleven men have been arrested for hijacking a building and assaulting tenants in Jeppestown, Johannesburg, according to the Hawks.

“The arrest happened after the syndicate started assaulting and kidnapping their tenants,” said Captain Paul Ramaloko.

The men, who were arrested yesterday morning, hijacked the 100-room Industria House in 2008, Ramaloko said.

Charging tenants R800 to R850 a month, the men had pocketed close to R5 million, Ramaloko said.

He said the building’s owner approached the Hawks on Tuesday, after his co-worker was killed, allegedly by the men.

The group was charged with pointing a firearm, assault and kidnapping. Charges of racketeering were also a possibility, Ramaloko said.

They were expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
