More than a dozen people have been detained, but so far only one person has been charged for the murder of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa, police said.

“We have detained and questioned 13 people with regard to the killing of Senzo Meyiwa,” divisional commissioner of detective services, Lieutenant-General Vinesh Moonoo, told reporters in Johannesburg today.

“After questioning all the suspects, we decided to arrest only one at this stage. The individual arrested is 25-year-old Zanokuhle Mbatha from Vosloorus.”

Moonoo said police were confident Mbatha played a part in the crime.

“We are confident he is linked to the crime and he will be charged with murder and robbery.”

Moonoo said investigations had revealed that two people, and not three, were involved in the shooting last Sunday.

It was initially claimed that two people entered the house and a third stayed outside.

“From what we have investigated, there were two people on the scene,” he said.

Meyiwa, who was also captain of Orlando Pirates, was killed in Vosloorus while visiting his singer and actress girlfriend Kelly Khumalo.

Two people allegedly entered the house, demanded cellphones, shot Meyiwa, and fled.

Mbatha appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, and the matter was postponed to November 11.

Moonoo said police were at a stage where they could focus on a court-driven investigation and follow up on other leads.

“But this does not mean the end of the investigation. We have cast the net as wide as possible to look at each and every possibility,” he said.
