17 kids injured in crash

Seventeen school children were injured, five seriously, when their stationary minibus taxi was hit by a truck in Paardekraal in the North West, paramedics said today.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said they arrived at the scene this morning to find the taxi had been pushed off the road, with injured children clambering from the wreckage and strewn across the veld.

All of the children were between the ages of three and 10.

“It is thought that the minibus had run out of fuel and the driver had pulled it to the roadside, leaving the children in the taxi while he went to fetch petrol,” Wicks said.

While the taxi was parked on the R510 near the Ramotjana Prison, a heavy-goods truck hit into it.

The children were rushed to hospital for further treatment.

Earlier, a caretaker was killed and six of her children seriously injured when their school bus collided with a truck in Soweto.

The bus had been transporting children from their homes in Soweto to the Philip Kushlick School for cerebral palsy, situated at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

On Wednesday, 21 children were seriously injured when their minibus taxi collided with a car on the N1 highway near Nasrec.

It is believed the taxi had been transporting the children to a school for the mentally handicapped in Maraisburg.
