Two doctors who lied about their medical qualifications have been dismissed by the Gauteng health department.

The doctors were among 10 employees who were found to have falsified their qualifications.

Health department spokesperson Prince Hamnca today said the fraudulent qualifications were uncovered as part of the ongoing employee qualifications verification process.

“The details of these cases were disclosed by Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu,” said Hamnca.

“Among the 10 employees were three administration clerks, two medical practitioners, two nursing auxiliary officers, two household workers and a porter. Eight of these officials had falsified matric certificates and the other two [had falsified] medical qualifications.”

Hamnca explained that eight officials, including two doctors, had been dismissed.

“One [employee] was given three months’ [suspension] without pay and a final warning sanction and the other is waiting for the appeal process to be concluded,” he said.

“There is sufficient case law to warrant the department, and employers in general, to take strong action against employees who are not entirely honest during the employment selection process,” he added.
