Two people were found dead in a student residence room at Rhodes University today, Eastern Cape police said.

The bodies of a woman (21) and a man (34) were found around 6am, Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula said.

No visible injuries were found on the woman’s body, who was a student at the university.

“A postmortem will be conducted to determine the cause of her death,” he said.

“The man had a bullet wound to the head and it is suspected that he may have shot himself.”

An inquest docket was opened to determine the cause of the woman’s death.

The university’s dean of students Vivian de Klerk said in a statement that the student’s name was Amanda Tweyi.

“I very much regret to announce the death of one of our students, Ms Amanda Tweyi this morning. Another person who is not a student at Rhodes University also lost his life in the unfortunate incident, which occurred at Cullen Bowles House.

“I am not at liberty to give further information about the circumstances, as police investigations are underway.”

Tweyi resided in Rosa Parks House and was in her second year of a Bachelor of Science degree.

De Klerk said Tweyi came from King William’s Town.

“We extend sincere condolences to her family and friends.”

She said students in both residences concerned would receive counselling. Arrangements for a memorial service would be announced in due course, she said.

Mjekula said the man was also believed to be from King William’s Town.
