2 held for impersonating metro officers

Two men have been arrested in Kempton Park after fake metro police uniforms and other illegal items were found in their possession.

Information was supplied to police by a citizen which led to the arrests yesterday, Ekurhuleni metro police Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said today.

Six suspicious men carrying bags were seen on Voortrekker road alighting from a Peugeot and getting into a silver VW Golf, which drove off.

“Metro police members conducted a stake out on the Peugeot and within an hour the ... Golf returned with two male occupants,” said Kgasago.

A short while later, the cars drove off, one behind the other.

“When the metro police instructed them to stop, the Peugeot driver abandoned his vehicle and tried to bolt on foot but was apprehended,” he said.

“The VW Golf driver took off ignoring the sirens and blue lights from the metro police. The metro police were able to arrest the driver when he lost control and landed in ditch ... his attempt to flee on foot failed as the metro police caught him.”

The two vehicles were seized by police.

In the Golf, metro police found a pistol loaded with 19 rounds of ammunition, a car jammer, three police reflective jackets, two blue police shirts, two blue caps, one brown belt and a wallet with a shield.

The two, aged 26 and 28, are due to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

They face charges including impersonating a metro officer, possession of implements used in stealing vehicles, possession of suspected stolen vehicles and possession of illegal firearms.
