2009

2009-12-19 13:34

THE most polite way to describe 2009 would be ... eventful. We have been through an election, the inauguration of President Jacob Zuma, the installation of a new government, an exciting World Cup draw, an international athletics saga, bull-fighting and juju.

The gender testing controversy around the gold award winning medallist, Caster Semenya, was the story of the year.

The antics of ANC Youth League president Julius Malema made him the most visible young politician since his predecessor, Peter Mokaba.

What a year! Life in South Africa is many things but it’s never boring.

Of course, the biggest and saddest story of the year was the recession. While some thought we would dodge its fall-out but this was not to be.

By the end of September about 1 million South Africans had lost their jobs. This year, we officially became the most unequal society in the world – our Gini coefficient, which measures inequality, beats all other nations.

How we wish we could say the same thing about Bafana Bafana.
