212 000 register for e-tolls

2012-01-11 14:31

More than 212 000 e-toll accounts have been registered with the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral).

Sanral has announced that 212 906 Gauteng e-toll account units had been registered by January 10 for phase one of the controversial Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP).

“Sanral wishes to thank all Gauteng e-road users who took the early initiative to register for e-toll and encourages all those who have not yet registered to become e-toll ready.”

Sanral said the toll commencement date of February 2012 was approaching, but did not state a specific date on which the tolls would become active.

Light motor vehicles are expected to be charged R0.40/km, medium vehicles R1/km, “longer” vehicles R2/km, and bikers R0.24/km.

Qualifying commuter taxis and buses would be exempted entirely.

Gauteng e-toll tags would only be operational at the Bakwena toll plaza from February.

GFIP phase one cost some R20 billion to complete, with most of it financed from loans.

Asked about Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele’s response to petitions against the tolling, spokesperson Logan Maistry said: “Further announcements on this matter will be made in due course.”

The Freedom Front handed in a petition of 105 000 audited signatures.

A joint petition that included the Congress of SA Trade Unions, the SA National Civic Organisation, the SA National NGO Coalition, the SA Transport and Allied Workers Union, and the Democratic Alliance was also submitted to Ndebele.
