3 000 wait for Juju in vain

2012-09-27 16:48

At least 3 000 workers crammed into an amphitheatre at Impala Platinum’s Rustenburg mine this afternoon, hoping to hear former ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema speak.

But there was no Malema. And the workers were not happy.

At around noon, the media was informed through an SMS that Malema wouldn’t be attending the meeting because he would allegedly faced arrest for attending a gathering for which a permit had not been issued.

The workers had gathered at around 3:30pm to receive feedback on wage negotiations with Implats.

Said Khaya Mzimeli, a spokesperson for the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu): “Malema was with us during the strike in January and wanted to be here. They are very disappointed because they regard him as their leader.”
Mzimeli said the Implats workers had not engaged in a strike but were involved in wage talks with Implats, seeking a 10% raise.

Mzimeli said management had made the workers “a very good offer”.
