3 killed, 52 injured in accidents

Three people have been killed and 52 injured in accidents around the country today.

Two people were killed in an accident near Maphumulo, KwaZulu-Natal.

KZN EMS spokesperson Robert Mckenzie said 16 others also travelling in the ten-seater vehicle sustained serious injuries.

“Paramedics arrived on scene to discover that tragically two people had sustained fatal injuries, while another 16 patients had sustained mostly serious injuries,” said Mckenzie.

The injured were stabilised and treated on the scene before being transported to Maphumulo hospital.

In Northern Cape, one person died and 18 people were injured when a taxi and a car collided head-on on the N18 in Hartswater.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said when paramedics arrived, the car and taxi were scattered across the highway.

“After triaging they established that one person had tragically died, one was in a critical condition and 17 others sustained injuries ranging from serious to minor,” Botha said.

The injured were stabilised on the scene before they were taken to hospital.

In another head-on collision between a taxi and car in Walkerville, south of Joburg, 18 people were injured. Botha said Netcare 911 paramedics found some of them trapped in the wreckage.

“After all the injured were treated at the scene, paramedics transported them to various hospitals in the area for the care that they required,” said Botha.

The cause of the three accidents was not yet known.
