3 police officers arrested in Cape Town

2010-05-12 11:12

Three police officers have been arrested on charges of armed

robbery, kidnapping and attempted murder, Cape Town police said today.

Warrant Officer Siyabulela Vukubi said the men were arrested by

Gugulethu and Athlone police in Maitland yesterday.

“These police members were arrested after allegations that they

went to a house in Rugby, Milnerton, where they identified themselves to the

complainant as members from police organised unit.”

He said the police – dressed in civilian clothing – searched the

house in the presence of the resident and his girlfriend, apparently looking for

drugs that were sold from the house.

During the search the officer allegedly found a bag with an unknown

amount of money belonging to the woman and ordered the owner to open his safe in

the bedroom.

“After he refused, he was allegedly assaulted until he opened the

safe and members took another amount of cash from the safe.”

The men then demanded that the owner open his shop near the house

but he lied, saying the keys were with his assistant in Khayelitsha.

The officers then allegedly drove to Khayelitsha with the

man.

“At Khayelitsha they ordered him out of the vehicle in a place

where the complainant is not familiar with, but he managed to get some help,”

said Vukubi.

He said the three men were later arrested. However, it was believed

that there was a fourth man involved.

The officers – aged between 29 and 35 – were expected to appear in

the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. – Sapa
