30% of North West buses fail roadworthy tests

2012-04-05 11:08

Of the 134 buses tested for roadworthiness in North West since Monday, 39 have failed.

Four other buses were discontinued because of the severity of their defects, said North West department of public safety spokesperson Lesolang Mmope.

The buses tested were all expected to travel long distances over the Easter holidays.

Mmope said his department made unannounced visits to various bus depots, where the buses were tested.

Those that failed would be re-tested and if they failed again they would be discontinued.

“The department further discontinued eight taxis which were also found to be having serious defects, during a raid conducted in different taxi ranks across the province,” said Mmope, adding the testing would continue throughout the Easter period.

Human settlements and public safety MEC Desbo Mohono appealed to motorists to be extra careful on the province’s main roads and to adhere to road rules.

Mohono warned that those caught violating the law would be harshly dealt with during and after the Easter period. “We will strive to be more visible throughout the period just to save the lives of law-abiding drivers.”
