75% of South Africans to watch Olympics – survey

Most people in 24 countries plan to watch the Olympic Games this year, according to a survey.

Seven in 10 (72%) of global citizens planned to watch part of the Olympics, market research company Ipsos said in a statement today.

The survey found 75% of South Africans intended watching the Olympics.

In China, the figure was 92%, in South Korea 91%, in India 90%, in Mexico 86% and in Brazil 84%.

People the least likely to watch were in Belgium (50%), Germany (54%), France (54%), Great Britain (61%), Hungary (66%), Canada (66%) and Sweden (66%).

Overall, 15% of people had no plans to watch, while 13% were undecided.

A total of 18 623 people were surveyed, and of the sports being contested, track and field (20%) and soccer (20%) registered the highest interest, followed by swimming (16%), and gymnastics (14%).

South Africans were most interested in track and field (33%), gymnastics (31%), then swimming (14%), the survey found.

It revealed that 38% of all respondents were worried about a possible terrorist attack during the Olympic Games.

South Africans were the least concerned, with 27%, preceded by Poland (21%), France (23%), and Hungary (24%).
