8 suspected rapists among 11 escaped Limpopo prisoners

Thirteen awaiting trial prisoners, including a suspected rapist, escaped from holding cells at Botlokwa police station. Two have since been re-arrested.

“Two police officials, a warrant officer and a constable, were visiting the awaiting trial prisoners at about 7:40pm last night when they were attacked,” said Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba.

“The police officials were overpowered by the inmates and severely assaulted. They were then robbed of cell keys and locked in one of the cells.”

Ramatseba said the injured officers were rescued by other police officers and rushed to the local health care centre where they were admitted.

“An intensive search for the escapees was launched and two of the 13 escapees were re-arrested around Botlokwa.”

They are Owen Phiri (20) who is awaiting trial for murder and Jacky Chepape (29), awaiting trial for robbery.

The escapees who were still on the run are: William Molokomme (36), contravention of the protection order; Wilson Mogale (18), housebreaking; and Thabo Letsoalo (23), housebreaking.

The rest were all awaiting trial for rape: William Letsoele (30), Simon Tlabela (32), Amos Malatji (26), Macbeth Moswati (29), Jimmy Phalantwa (22), Sello Maake (26), Matome Makofane (19) and Thabang Matloga (18).
