80% say petrol attendants invaluable

2011-11-25 11:27

Eighty percent of South Africans think that petrol attendants provide an invaluable service, according to a survey by a fuel company released today.

South Africa is one of the few countries where petrol attendants were still operating petrol pumps for customers, Caltex said in a statement.

There were about 50 000 petrol attendants employed in South Africa of which Caltex retailers employed about 10 000 at their 750 branded stations across the country.

According to the survey, 52% of South Africans always tip attendants. The majority tipped R5.

Ninety-seven percent of South Africans also visited the same petrol station each time they needed to fill up.

This was because of the “friendly, welcoming staff who offer great service”, according to the survey.

“The figures from the survey and this great accomplishment show that it’s not just the premium fuels that keep customers coming back but that customer service, facilities and local relevance also play a huge role,” said Geraldine McConnach, programmes and training manager for Caltex.

“This is a true reflection of their hard work and commitment to service delivery.”
