A day to commemorate personal connections and responsibility

2010-07-09 13:20

Did you know that the ocean is the life support system on Planet Earth? That is why it is the responsibility of human beings to act today to ensure that future generations can still benefit from it.

The power to start a positive change for the ocean and ensure its healthy functioning lies in small changes in everyday human habits.

The world’s oceans are interconnected to form one ocean, a huge shared territory with no boundaries that everyone is responsible for.

In 1992 Canada proposed the creation of a World Oceans Day during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Since the International Meeting Acting Together for the Future of the Blue Planet held in 2002, with the support and help of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, the Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network, the coordination of this event as an international celebration of the world ocean has been made possible.

The emphasis is on and your and my personal connection to the sea, and there has been active participation by hundreds of aquariums, zoos, museums, conservation organisations, educational organisations, government agencies, and citizens in over 50 countries.

Together, they work to have the United Nations officially designate June 8th as an international World Oceans Day.
