A positive newspaper for a new age

2010-07-24 09:47

When is your launch date?
Mid-September.

Who is your target market?
LSM four to 10.

How many readers do you hope to get and by when?
The initial print run will be 170 000.

Will you publish in a broadsheet or tabloid format?
We will be a broadsheet that is similar to the Financial Times.

What type of content will you provide and who will provide it?
All content will be produced and edited by our internal editorial team. The product is GLONAREGICAL – global; national; regional and local – covering all nine provinces. It will be relevant, easy to read and to the point.

There is certainly a gap in the South African marketplace for a new, fresh, innovative and critically constructive national daily newspaper.

What challenges do you foresee in launching during a recession?
With the positive attitude that we will be promoting – we believe that the worst of the recession is behind us now and it is time to move forward with this new venture.

What has the response been so far from advertisers?
Our initial interaction with the media houses has been very encouraging. People want to hear some good news, especially when it comes packaged with fair and relevant content and up-to-date news and features.

What is your distribution strategy?
Distribution will be outsourced to the country’s leading media distributor, reaching the whole country. A contract to this effect has been signed.

Why are you going for print in an age when content is freely and readily available online?
Print media has been the preferred method of news dissemination for centuries and will certainly not disappear for many years. There is no denying the internet is fast becoming a real contender for an alternative media source of choice. The fact that internet penetration at home level is still small in SA does limit this medium still. The New Age will, however, be available in an online version. This is a strategic focus area for us immediately as well as for the future. We are joining the industry today and due to our technological positioning will be able to lead the way for the industry going forward. In a country that has 49 million people none of us should be satisfied that only 10 million people are reading newspapers.

What is your view on the concerns about the owner’s proximity to President Jacob Zuma?
In the tradition of a strong business family the Gupta family has built many close friendships in South Africa over the past 18 years. The association with the Zuma family stretches as far back as 2002, long before the current political assembly. No one in the past 18 years can point a finger that the Gupta family or Gupta brothers ever took one cent of commercial advantage or commercial benefit from any government department, any contract or anything.

What will Times of India, your strategic partners, bring to the party?
Times of India is the largest English newspaper in the world, printing more than four million copies a day. We have access to their expertise, their experience and above all their fresh and innovative way of thinking.
