A school and a shining beacon

2010-11-13 15:38

At a time when our schools appear to be under the strain of rapes and other evils it is heartening to read about Limpopo’s Dendron Secondary School.

Voted one of the best top 10 maths and science schools in the country, Dendron is doing unbelievable work against all odds.

With no laboratories or any other facilities found in urban schools, this school, with the co-operation of parents, teachers and the pupils, is a shining example we should replicate countrywide.

Here, from Grade 11 the pupils take extra lessons until midnight with the help of the community and dedicated teachers. And their efforts are paying off.

Besides being voted among the best in the country, the school also boasts achieving a 100% pass rate since inception in 2003, except for just one year.

At least 90% of the parents attend meetings, showing how much value they put in the future of their children.

Pupils must be safe at schools, where they spend most of their week days, and for that parents, teachers, communities and the children need to work together like they do at Dendron.

The teacher must go back to being the role model again and at home the parents and communities must not become bystanders in the moulding of these young people.

Dendron is showing us how.
