AB in doubt for Champions League T20

2012-10-04 13:02

Proteas’ limited-overs captain AB de Villiers could miss the Champions League T20, which starts on Tuesday.
De Villiers is suffering from a niggling back and left ankle injury.

His imminent exclusion could leave the Titans short of firepower as they are without Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel and Faf du Plessis, who chose to represent their respective Indian Premier League franchises.

They will also be without young speedster Marchant de Lange, who is out because of a back stress fracture.

“I’ve been struggling with it for quite a while now and it has got worse. With the left ankle, I have had surgery on it and it has come back now. I’ll see a couple of specialists and a call will be made in the next couple of weeks,” he said.

Proteas team doctor and manager Mohammed Moosajee said De Villiers underwent MRI scans, which have necessitated the involvement of a specialist.

Moosajee said the injuries could have been exacerbated by the amount of cricket that De Villiers has been playing.

He also added that the recovery period is three to four weeks, so if he rests in that period, he could be in good nick for the tour of Australia, which starts in mid-November.

“The injuries are worse than they were because of the volume and the load and the amount of cricket. If it wasn’t for the World Cup, we would have probably sat him out,” he said.

“He has this chronic lower back and ankle injury and the more you play, the more chances it flares up. Once it flares up, you have to manage it and that is where the physiotherapist really gets busy.”
