ANC, Cosatu to hold summit

2010-09-14 07:19

The ANC and Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) have decided that an alliance summit should be held before November.

“The meeting received a presentation of the Cosatu central executive committee discussion paper on the alliance,” ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe and his Cosatu counterpart Zwelinzima Vavi said in a joint statement.

“The ANC engaged with the paper.

“The conclusion was that, particularly on policy questions, there was in reality a lot of common ground between the two organisations.

“Areas of divergence of view will be isolated and further discussed after the ANC national general council.”

The ANC called the meeting after Cosatu said their alliance, which also includes the SA Communist Party, was dysfunctional.

Vavi criticised the state of the alliance during the crippling countrywide strike by public servants earlier this month.

According to the ANC and Cosatu: “It is agreed that the alliance summit will be held as soon as all the discussions had happened at leadership level, so that we provide the necessary leadership when the alliance summit takes place.

“It is envisaged that the alliance summit will be held during October or November this year.”
