ANC, Cosatu to meet over recent tensions

2010-09-20 11:32

The ANC will meet with its alliance partner Cosatu after this week’s ANC national general council in Durban to deal with tensions between the two, particularly the verbal clashes which took place during the recent public sector strike.

President Jacob Zuma said while the content of the meetings could not be pre-empted, it would be “wrong” not to talk openly about the “things which have characterised” the recent strike and “distortions” by workers and some Cosatu leaders of the ANC’s historical approach to the working class.

“The ANC has always fought on the side of the workers and will continue to do so. As far as we are concerned there is no ambiguity about our being in alliance with Cosatu given that history,” Zuma said.

He said the alliance had been “built through sweat and blood” and was no mere paper agreement or electoral pact.“It is important, comrades, that we should not play around with the alliance,” Zuma said.

Zuma said the issues would be hammered out but that there would be no attempt to dump the party’s trade union partner.

“The bold headlines about the imminent death of the alliance are grossly exaggerated. It will live for a long time to come.”
