ANC leaders have taken a sideswipe at the jobs and economic promises of opposition parties, saying the governing party has actually costed its manifesto.

Head of the ANC’s economic transformation cluster, Enoch Godongwana, said the manifestos of most parties mentioned expenditure and didn’t mention where the money would come from.

“We are a ruling party. The things we mention in our manifesto are realistic, concrete and budgeted for,” he said.

Finance minister Pravin Gordhan added that all the ANC’s promises have been costed.

Asked whether government shouldn’t be taking more of a leftwing stance, he implied that ultra-left policies in other countries hadn’t worked as well as they were supposed to.

Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi said his department had delivered on creating jobs in the expanded public works programme (EPWP). The next target was to create six million jobs by 2019.

He said even the parties who had criticised the EPWP now recognised its importance.

The DA, in its manifesto, promises to create seven million jobs through the EPWP in addition to six million “real jobs”.
