ANC birthday bash clean-up underway

2012-01-09 08:52

A major clean-up operation has started in Bloemfontein early this morning – especially around the Free State Stadium where the main ANC centenary celebrations took place.

The Free State Stadium was packed yesterday and some revellers were shown to spill-over venues like the Loch Logan Waterfront and the Rose Garden.

Cleaners from the Mangaung Metro moved in early this morning to tackle the litter, which could be seen everywhere.

Several visitors who didn’t have a place to sleep this weekend ran for cover at the Parkweg police station and the Central University of Technology – in the vicinity of the Free State Stadium – when it started to rain shortly after the main event in the stadium last night.

Some blamed the national leadership of the ANC for being stranded. They said the leadership informed their regional leadership very late that representatives from regions were supposed to pay for their own transport, accommodation and food.

Mandla Maseko, spokesperson for the ANC in the Free State, said party officials and volunteers were packing up equipment, tents and all temporary structures today at the venues that were used for the celebrations. He said some members of the party’s leadership had left last night, while others were expected to leave today.
