ANC centenary: Sleeping on streets no problem for ‘pilgrims’

2012-01-05 06:54

Sleeping in buses or on the street would not worry ANC supporters attending the centenary celebrations in Bloemfontein this weekend because “this is a pilgrimage”, Free State Premier Ace Magashule has said.

Magashule was responding to questions about the shortage of accommodation for the up to 100 000 people expected to attend the celebrations.

The premier said he had consulted the Mangaung municipality so that people would be allowed to sleep anywhere as long as they have a place to freshen up.

City Press contacted several hotels and guesthouses which said that they had been fully booked months in advance.

The ANC has confirmed that 46 heads of state had accepted the invitation to attend. A total of 60 were invited.

Some of them are expected to stay in rented houses in the upmarket Woodland Hills Estate. Private homeowners agreed to rent their houses for up to R20 000.

Thabo Manyoni, executive mayor of the Mangaung Metro, appealed to land owners to make their land available so stranded visitors could pitch their tents.
