ANC may expel 30 members who revolted against candidate lists

2011-03-26 09:53

About 20 members of the ANC in the Eastern Cape who were involved in challenging the party over election candidate lists faced possible expulsion, the party said today.

“According to an ANC NEC memorandum, they have 30 days to explain why they should not be expelled,” said provincial spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane.

“All those involved in such ructions will face our internal disciplinary processes,” he said.

The province faced widespread revolt over its candidate lists, with many regions challenging them in court.

Yesterday the High Court in Mthatha dismissed an application challenging the Eastern Cape’s OR Tambo election candidates.

This came after an interim order was granted to the region preventing the ANC from submitting its candidate lists on time.

The judgment was handed down an hour before the Independent Electoral Commission 5pm deadline for the submission of lists.

Cases brought by the Amathole and Buffalo City regions were dismissed with costs.

A case brought by the Alfred Nzo region was also dismissed on Wednesday.

“Some of our members are committed to bring our ANC into disrepute just for personal gain. We are excited that in all these matters, the courts independently ruled in our favour,” Qoboshiyane said.

“We will ask the applicants why they didn’t vent internally using the proper platforms, but we will also look at the many members behind them who were possibly involved.”

The party had submitted candidates for all 718 wards in the province by the Independent Electoral Commission’s deadline yesterday.

Qoboshiyane said the focus was now on campaigning for more votes.
