ANC ready for Tlokwe by-elections

2013-10-03 15:31

The ANC is confident of clinching the Tlokwe by-elections scheduled for October 23, the party has said.

“Campaigning is rolling slowly and it is going to culminate in an overwhelming ANC victory. On the 23rd, in the evening, we will be celebrating our victory,” provincial chairperson Supra Mahumapelo told reporters today.

Based on interactions they had with the community, there was “no doubt” the ANC would win all the remaining six wards, he said.

Mahumapelo said volunteers had been campaigning to ensure the municipality was retaken from the Democratic Alliance-led coalition.

The DA came into power at the municipality when 14 ANC councillors voted for a motion of no confidence in the previous mayor, Maphetle Maphetle.

They were expelled by the party’s provincial disciplinary committee, but the ANC’s national disciplinary committee later overturned the expulsions.

Maphetle was replaced by DA councillor Annette Combrink.

Mahumapelo said the DA’s failure to be part of a council meeting in recent weeks was simply a postponement of the inevitable. He said they could run “for now” but would “hit a brick wall” on the 23rd when the people of Tlokwe headed to the polls.

“We will wait for our own majority. The masses of our people will decide. We will have the majority we need to begin to govern Tlokwe in the manner which the ANC and people of Tlokwe want it to be governed,” he said.

“We are going to embark on a programme to transform that area, particularly the town, to make sure we change the situation. This time we are going to be more resolute and focused,” he said.
