ANC rethink on lopsided labour laws mooted

2011-02-26 17:44

The ANC stands on the brink of recommending to Parliament that controversial new labour laws be changed.

This follows a report in City Press last week citing calculations by trade union Solidarity which showed that new labour legislation could mean job losses for hundreds of thousands of coloured and Indian workers.

Proposed changes to the Employment Equity Act meant that instead of provincial ratios, national racial figures would have to be applied countrywide in the appointing of staff.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe yesterday told City Press that part of the proposed legislation had not been formulated properly.

“I do not want to say too much before Parliament makes a decision, and the National Economic Development and Labour Council has also made its contributions, but I would not be surprised if the ANC supports changes to the bill.”

His comments brought to an end an exceptionally tough week for the ANC, especially in Western Cape, where coloured people reacted with anger to the bill which is currently being circulated for public comment.
