ANC salutes police heroes

2010-07-24 07:46

The ANC is shocked and distressed to hear the news of the death of seven police officers – five policemen, a police pilot and a crew member – in Mpumalanga.

These police officers, who were attached to the national intervention unit, died while on duty. They were responding to a robbery at a bakery in Witbank.

We salute their bravery and commitment. When there was a national duty call, they did not hesitate to defend the community. They placed the interests of the nation ahead of their own. They are indeed our heroes and they deserve to be honoured for their commitment and patriotism.

Their efforts to fight crime and corruption will never be forgotten. As they rest in peace, they must know that many of their colleagues and the entire South African population will continue to fight against the scourge of crime and corruption.

We are confident that the police will still do us proud in the future by ridding our streets of these criminals and thugs.

Our condolences go out to all the families and friends affected, to the police department and the police commissioner, and to all the law-abiding citizens of our beloved country.

Jackson Mthembu
ANC national spokesperson
