Tensions are rising outside the ANC headquarters, where thousands of ANC supporters have gathered to “defend Luthuli House”.

With the DA’s march to Beyers Naude Square expected to pass within mere blocks of Luthuli House in the next hour, ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte told the crowd that people had the “right to march, but not to Luthuli House”.

She reminded the crowd that they were disciplined cadres and said they “would not pick a fight with anybody”.

Scores of members of the crowd outside Luthuli House were carrying bricks, sticks, knobkerries and metal poles, and some enthusiastically burnt blue DA T-shirts.

A man armed with a brick told City Press it was “for the DA”.

“This is our office, it is not a government office,” he said.

Another man said his brick was merely for “display”.

“If they cross this border, something is going to happen to them,” he said.

Riot police have gathered at the point where the ANC and DA crowds are likely to come close to each other. The police have stationed a water cannon at the spot.
