ANC to deal with Nyanda, Vavi spat

2010-06-26 14:23

The African National Congress will deal politically with the

defamatory statement made against Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda by

Congress of SA Trade Unions secretary general, Zwelinzima Vavi.

Nyanda’s office said in a statement today that the minister had

decided to leave the matter for the ANC to deal with.

“General Nyanda’s decision follows that of the ANC National Working

Committee (NWC) this week, condemning Vavi’s unsubstantiated utterances and the

Committee’s decision to have the ANC leadership deal with the matter

politically,” the communications department said in the statement.

Nyanda welcomed the NWC’s decision, saying that he “felt

relieved”.

“I have thus instructed my attorneys to stay the proceedings on

this matter in order to allow ANC processes to unfold without hindrance,” Nyanda

said.

At a media briefing after a meeting of Cosatu leaders last month,

Vavi singled out Nyanda and Cooperative Governance Minister Sicelo Shiceka when

criticising the government’s failure to act on allegations of corruption in

Cabinet.

Vavi had said reports that Shiceka lied about his qualifications in

his CV and the conduct of Nyanda, who spent half-a-million rand on hotels in

Cape Town, should be probed.
